Gemini Won't Generate Images: How to Fix
Image generation refuses, returns text instead, or is missing entirely from your account.
Updated August 13, 2026
Image generation failures fall into three groups: unavailable, refused, and silently substituted. The fix depends on which one you are seeing.
Unavailable on your account
Image generation is restricted by region, by age on the account, and by administrator policy on Workspace accounts. If you never see an image option at all, this is the cause. A personal Google account in a supported country is the way to confirm it.
Refused prompts
Gemini declines to generate identifiable real people, minors in most contexts, violent or sexual content, and images resembling copyrighted characters or trademarks. Rewrite the prompt to describe an archetype rather than a named person — "a middle-aged chef in a busy kitchen" rather than a celebrity name.
Text returned instead of an image
When a prompt is ambiguous the model can interpret it as a request to describe rather than to create. Begin with an explicit instruction: "Generate an image of…". If you are calling the API, confirm you are using an image-capable model and that the response modalities are configured to include images.
Generation starts and fails
Retry once — transient capacity failures are common at peak times. If it keeps failing across prompts, check whether the wider service is degraded in Is Gemini down right now?
